In the coastal regions, you can find thick subtropical vegetation and deep ravines, while the steep slopes are home to some beautiful Forests. Moving to the midlands, you’ll encounter moist grasslands with scattered patches of Forest. The northern parts have mainly moist savanna habitats, whereas the Drakensberg region mainly consists of alpine grasslands. This province boasts rich biodiversity, with a variety of plant and animal species. The iSimangaliso Wetland Park and uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. These parks, along with Ndumo, are crucial wetlands for migratory species and are recognized as Ramsar sites under the Ramsar Convention that South Africa signed in 1971 to protect important wetland habitat. You can find several game reserves in the province, such as the notable Hluhluwe–Imfolozi Park, known for its successful conservation of the southern white rhinoceros.
