My wife, Cornelia, and I decided to have a go at the Dragonflies at Imvubu lodge next to the caravan park. It is a holiday resort with chalets and restaurants. It has a little pond and the edges are excellent for dragonflies. I am new at this and decided to try a small standard 70 to 300 mm Canon Zoom lens. It is light to carry. I was impressed; this is the lens for butterflies and dragonflies. We had a sweaty 3 km walk, but it paid off. Between the two of us, we spotted quite a variety of dragonflies.
It takes patience. Position yourself at the water`s edge; dragonflies will fly past, but return to the same spot.
I found it is easier to use manual focusing, focusing on the eyes. It becomes tricky with the smaller species. We did not target birds on this occasion.
