After visiting Ithala, we decided to stop over at Mkhuze Game Reserve.
We stayed in the main camp in a self-catering chalet. It is comfortable, maintenance can be improved. The atmosphere is good and we braaied in the evenings. Bucks strolled past us.
We visited the Kumasinga Hide. Go early morning or late afternoon. Be patient. It’s worthwhile to wait. There is always a nice surprise and it’s a good birding spot. Got beautiful pictures of oxpeckers bathing.
Then off to the Nsumo Pan. The viewing platforms are great. It is was disappointing this trip with very few water birds. The winter does not help.
A nice spot is close to the entrance, close to the caravan park. It is the Kwamalibala hide. I have neglected this spot and we met a birder from Cape town doing bird call recordings. Got great photos of the Water Thicknee.
Some special birds were: White-faced Whistling-Duck, Openbill Stork, Golden-breasted Bunting, Red-billed Firefinch, Crowned Hornbill and Goliath Heron.
We saw some mammals.
