2024 06 21 to 27 Ithala Game Reserve

Brigid and I visited Ithala game reserve from 21 to 27 June. We took advantage of the 40% Pensioner discount which included breakfast. We joined Dom Rollinson and his family who were birding the area. Dom is one of South Africa`s top birders and taught me all about birding during his time at Birdlife Zululand.

Dom highlighted where I could find the Barrows Korhaan on the Kwankosazana loop. This was a Lifer (First time) for me.

The trip included a visit to Ngome Indigenous Forest, 70kms from Ithala which has an amazing 40 orchid species. This spot must be visited.

Make sure to see the Galpin`s Fire lilies on the river at the campsite. This is a winter`s special.

The most spectacular road is the one leading to the Picnic Site on the Pongola River. This will include all the various habitats. The reserve has a 950-metre variance in elevation from the top of the mountain to the river.

Some special birds seen: Lanner Falcon, Red-capped Lark, Shelley`s Franklin and Buff Streaked Chats.

I will be going back!
