Surrounded by quartzite and banded ironstone hills, riverine forest and cliffs, the Bivane Dam is a nature enthusiast’s dream. The area is blessed with soils and a climate which ensures a high level of plant diversity, over eight hundred identified plant species. Birdlife is excellent and varied. It has mixed broad-leafed woodland and rocky outcrops.
Completed in 2000, the Bivane Dam was built on the Bivane River, a tributary of the Pongola River. The Bivane Dam is easily accessible, situated near the center of the triangle formed by the towns of Vryheid, Pongola and Piet Retief.
It is very well maintained. It offers chalets and camp sites and even routes for 4*4 driving.
