I travelled from Richards Bay to Pongola then took a shortcut over the mountains, connecting with the Pongola Vryheid road, then travelled through Louwsburg. I am staying more then 30 years in Richards Bay and this is my first visit To Itala Game Reserve. I could not believe my eyes, what amazing scenery. A friend Recommended the reserve.
This amazing reserve, vary from the heights of the Ngotshe Mountains a thousand meters down into a deep valley, carved over the thousands of years by the Phongolo River revealing the world’s oldest rock formations makes Ithala Game Reserve a visitors paradise.
It has rugged, mountainous thornveld of northern KwaZulu-Natal. Has various habitats hosting an mazing biodiversity. Some of the oldest rock formations in the entire world are found at Ithala Game Reserve. Ithala’s terrain extends over lowveld and densely vegetated riverine valleys to high-lying grassland plateaus, ridges and cliff faces.
The roads are well maintained, the chalets are very comfortable and I found the staff very friendly.
This is a great destination for people enjoying biodiversity and that want to break away. On my first trip I recorded 193 species(Including plants, mammals, birds and butterflies).
